Daryl was literally born into the world of show dogs.  Under the tutelage of her late-mother, Rena Martin, a renown professional handler and breeder, Daryl quickly became very proficient in this area.

Daryl’s love of all dogs, especially show dogs, and her expertise were apparent early-on as she qualified in Junior Handling for Westminster many years, and placed in the finals several times.  One year Daryl had the most wins of any other junior in the country as well.  In 1969 Daryl appeared live on the Today Show with TV and Sports Personality, Joe Gariagolia, during the Westminster Dog Show being interviewed regarding junior handling.  And, in 1985, Daryl again appeared on television, this time with David Letterman regarding her #1 toy dog, CH Cabrand’s Agent Orange v. Lou Wan (known as O.J. to his friends) again during the Westminster Dog Show.

Daryl has bred and/or owned or co-owned or handled Group and BIS winning Maltese, Shih Tzus, Tibetan Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Silky Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Cairn Terriers, and Norfolk Terriers.  Additionally, Daryl exhibited many other types of breed dogs to their AKC Championship titles.  As a breeder of Maltese, she’s had AMA’s top producing dam and male in 1993.

Daryl campaigned several Maltese over the years to Number 1 status in all the systems, including Top Toy Dog.  Until recently she held the record for toy dogs with the most Group 1s; O.J. had 181 Group firsts, besides his 28 Best in Shows. And, the Maltese CH Joanne-Chen’s Mino Maya  Dancer achieved more toy Group Ones than any other Maltese, amounting to 150, until Vicki Abbott (one of Daryl’s protégés) broke the record with Henry, 10 years later.

Daryl is probably the only person who besides showing her own dogs, has exhibited more lines of Maltese than anyone in the history of the breed.  It is also fair to say that Daryl is among the very few individuals, if not the only one, who has seen all the breed winning show dogs from the late 1950’s to the present day.  It is likely that Daryl has shown more Maltese to Best in Show and Group Ones than any other person involved with the breed.

In 1999 she exhibited CH Bienaimee Mino Maya Felix to the Number 1 spot, and in 2000, she again achieved that prestigious ranking with CH Divine Risque Moment.

Daryl has been an active member of AMA for 30+ years.   She has attended more AMA specialties than any other member, and she frequently conducts judges’ breed seminars.  Daryl has mentored numerous Maltese fanciers and breeders over the years.   Daryl’s love, knowledge, and expertise of the Maltese breed are legendary.
